Dr. Friedman trained in Nephrology at Peter Bent Brigham with Dr. John Merrill. In 1963 he opened the dialysis facility at Downstate Medical Center as part of the early government-funded demonstration project. He has cared for nephrology patients in Brooklyn while traveling around the world lecturing about the care of kidney patients. At the time of this interview Dr. Friedman continued to work as a distinguished teaching professor of medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

DWM: Terrific, it is January 21, 2008, and today I am talking to Dr. Eli Friedman. We are conducting this interview over dinner in Manhattan. Dr. Friedman was born in Brooklyn, New York in April of 1933. He grew up in Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn College for his undergraduate education. He also attended medical school at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, and of note, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, is the oldest, hospital-based medical school in the United States. After graduating from medical school in Brooklyn, Dr. Friedman traveled to Boston for internship, residency and fellowship training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. Dr. Friedman started the first federally funded dialysis facility at Downstate Medical Center in 1963. He has been involved in a number of nephrology-related organizations and has served as the president of both the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs, and the International Society of Artificial Internal Organs. He has been involved in the American Association of Kidney Patients since the organization began, and received the AAKP medal of excellence award in 1963. Dr. Friedman has published and lectured extensively about nephrology issues including treatment, modalities and diabetes care, while continuing to practice medicine at Downstate Medical Center.
